Don't take tablets straight away: what helps with stomach problems
Be it because of sumptuous meals, foods that are not well tolerated or simply because you are more "sensitive": stomach problems are common. It is usually not advisable to take tablets quickly. Long-term medication can harm the body. Various home remedies can help with gastrointestinal complaints.

Listen to your own body
Gastrointestinal complaints are common. Stress is a common cause of stomach pain. For some people, the cause is also a glass of wine in the evening or high-fiber food that they cannot tolerate. You shouldn't take tablets straight away. With a sensitive stomach, it is better to listen to your own body.

Home remedies for heartburn
That is what Hans Michael Mühlenfeld from the General Practitioners' Association advises. In a message from the dpa news agency, he said: "The best thing to do is to try it out for yourself if you don't get particularly fatty dishes."

In addition, most people feel better if they eat several small portions and chew each bite well. According to the doctor, home remedies such as a glass of milk or Bullrich salt help against heartburn - "everything that binds acid".

One of the best home remedies for heartburn, according to other health experts, is raw sauerkraut.

Healthy eating and relaxation
Smoking and consumption of alcohol, certain foods such as chocolate, fatty or spicy meals or carbonated drinks should be reduced if necessary.

Since stress is a major trigger for heartburn, relaxation exercises for stress relief, such as yoga or autogenic training, are available.

Methods to stimulate digestion are also useful, for example with the help of Swedish bitters or by chewing the food extensively.

Home-made remedies for stomach pain can be used to make homemade teas, for example with fennel or caraway seeds.

Medications are often tempting
Although the complaints can often be remedied naturally, both doctors and patients often use gastric acid blockers, so-called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

"These funds help very well," said Mühlenfeld according to dpa. "It is accordingly tempting to take them," says the doctor, who has his practice in Bremen.

More side effects than previously known
Only recently, the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) warned against long-term side effects such as osteoporosis in this context.

In a press release, they wrote: "Recently there have been increasing indications that long-term use of PPI could cause more side effects than previously known."

PPIs like omeprazole should therefore only be taken if the doctor has prescribed them and their administration is really necessary. They are used, among other things, for gastric diseases caused by acid.

"In some cases, their use as" stomach protection ", ie as prevention of bleeding from the stomach, triggered by the long-term use of certain medications such as acetylsalicylic acid or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, is sensible and important," said the DGVS expert Professor Dr. med. Matthias Ebert, in a message. (ad)
