World's first penis and scrotum transplant performed

Doctors in the United States have achieved a medical sensation. For the first time in the world, doctors have transplanted a penis and scrotum. According to the surgeons, the patient should be able to urinate and be sexually active again in the future with the donated organ.

Complete penile and scrotum transplant

Transplant medicine has made tremendous progress worldwide in the past decades. Organs such as kidneys, liver and lungs are often transplanted these days. In recent years, medical doctors have also managed sensational operations. This is how doctors in the USA managed to transplant a skull cap. And recently, French medical professionals reported a patient who received his third face after the first graft was rejected. Another medical sensation has now been achieved in the USA. The world's first complete penis and scrotum transplantation was carried out there.

Operation lasted 14 hours

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland reports in a message on Twitter that the 14-hour operation was carried out on a US soldier who was injured in Afghanistan.

According to a communication from the university, this was the first successful complete penis and scrotum transplant in the world.

"We are confident that this transplant will help this young man urinate again and his sexual functions return," said Andrew Lee, professor and director of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The patient has recovered well

A team of nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons participated in the 14-hour operation on March 26. They transplanted the entire penis, scrotum (without testicles) and part of the abdominal wall from a deceased donor.

"It is a really incredible injury, it is not easy to accept it," said the recipient, who wants to remain anonymous.

“When I woke up for the first time, I finally felt more normal… and also had a certain level of confidence. Trust ... finally I'm okay. "

According to the message, the patient has recovered well from the operation that was performed about a month ago and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in a few days.

"As with any transplant surgery, tissue rejection is a problem," the doctors write. The patient is treated with immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection.

Become a father thanks to penis transplantation

Even though the US doctors reported the world's first complete penis and scrotum transplant, it was not the first male limb transplant.

The first successful penis transplant was reported in South Africa in 2015.

The surgeon Frank Graewe from the University of Stellenbosch near Cape Town said at the time: "We have proven that it is possible - we can give someone an organ that is as good as what he had."

A few months after the operation, the man became a father thanks to the penis transplant.

The first penis transplant in the United States was carried out in 2016. At that time, a 64-year-old man whose genitals had been amputated due to cancer received the donor organ of a deceased person. (ad)
