Gigantic proportions: recall of lactalis baby food in 83 countries

The French dairy company Lactalis launched a worldwide recall for baby milk products weeks ago. The affected product could be contaminated with salmonella. According to media reports, over twelve million packages are to be recalled. Over 80 countries are affected.

Recall for baby milk products due to salmonella risk

The French dairy company Lactalis launched a worldwide recall for baby milk products in early December because of a possible risk of salmonella. These bacteria can cause diarrhea and other health problems. In France, more than 30 young children were ill before the recall. A case of illness had also been reported from Spain and one was being examined in Greece. It has now become known that over 80 countries are affected by the Salmonella scandal.

Over 80 countries affected

According to media reports, 83 countries have already been affected by the scandal surrounding Lactalis baby milk contaminated with Salmonella.

The head of the group, Emmanuel Besnier, has so far not made any public statements, but has told the French newspaper "Journal du dimanche" that more than twelve million packages are being recalled worldwide.

He therefore promised affected families compensation. According to the report, the consequences for consumers, including babies under the age of six months, are "very great concerns" for him.

Bacteria cause gastrointestinal infections

Salmonella are bacteria that can trigger severe gastrointestinal disorders (salmonellosis).

The disease occurs a few hours to days after the infection and manifests itself primarily through sudden onset diarrhea, abdominal pain, malaise, feeling cold and headache.

In some cases, vomiting and mild fever are added.

“The symptoms often last for several days. The resulting dehydration can be very pronounced in small children or older adults, ”writes the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on its website.

"In rare cases, the initial inflammation of the intestine can take on a septic course, sometimes with a high fever," said the experts. In rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

According to doctors, it is particularly important for the sick to drink a lot. Infected infants should definitely be taken to a doctor, especially if the discomfort lasts longer.

No lactalis baby milk in Germany

Lactalis is one of the largest dairy groups in the world. According to the company, the company does not sell any baby milk in Germany.

In Germany, the group mainly has président, galbani and salakis cheeses in supermarkets.

After a meeting with French Economics Minister Bruno Le Maire, Lactalis has ordered all baby milk products from its Craon factory in western France to go out of business after a meeting with AFP news agency. (ad)
