Breast implants are used to shape the breast and can be used, for example, to restore the female breast after breast tissue has been removed (breast reconstruction). However, their use in cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation is far more common. Corresponding breast operations are a routine procedure in plastic surgery today, although there is always a certain residual risk. The breast implants used usually consist of a silicone sleeve filled with silicone gel or a saline solution. The use of inferior materials can pose a high health risk due to the permanent presence of the breast implants in the body. That is why, for example, in the wake of the scandal surrounding the implants from the French manufacturer PIP, which were filled with industrial silicone, doctors advised that these implants be removed.
